The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joseph Drexel Cassidy (ASN: 1168061), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 124th Field Artillery, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 1 November 1918. After three members of his gun crew had been wounded during heavy enemy shell fire, Sergeant Cassidy, alone, continued to keep his gun in action. Later, after reorganizing his section, he administered first-aid treatment to the wounded men.
