The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Clark Butterfield (ASN: 1196687), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 13th Machine-Gun Battalion, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 14 October 1918. Leaving his shelter in a shallow machine-gun emplacement, and accompanying an officer, Sergeant Butterfield ventured forth through a most intense fire, to the aid of a wounded officer, and assisted in carrying him a distance of 170 yards to safety.
