The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Bugler Olius Berkompas (ASN: 263169), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 125th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 11 October 1918. In the attack on Hill 258 Bugler Berkompas volunteered to carry messages from his company in the attacking line to the battalion post of command. In order to reach the post of command it was necessary to cross an open area of about 500 yards in width, subjected to intense machine-gun fire and under direct observation of the enemy. He was killed while engaged in this mission.
