The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Urbane F. Bass, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 372d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 93d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Monthois, France, October 1 – 6, 1918. During the attack on Monthois Lieutenant Bass administered first aid in the open under prolonged and intense shell fire until he was severely wounded and carried from the field.
