    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph P. Balling (ASN: 1749662), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grand Pre, France, 1 November 1918. Assigned to the duty of carrying rations, water and ammunition to the front line, Corporal Balling led his details over ground, under incessant gas attacks, and terrific shell fire. Although his force was greatly decreased through casualties, he maintained complete control, and succeeded in supplying the troops with necessities. After being helplessly wounded, he directed the movements for the safety of his detail and the care of the wounded.
