The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Benjamin R. Bacon (ASN: 1901194), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 326th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, south of Champigneulles, France, 16 October 1918. Twice wounded by machine-gun bullets, Sergeant Bacon continued to lead his platoon through heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, penetrating the enemy lines and silencing several machine-guns.
