The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class George S. McCauley, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service as member of the boat’s crew of the U.S.S. WANDERER at the time of the burning of the FLORENCE “H” on 17 April 1918. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Macauley went among the burning wreckage and exploding ammunition at great risk to rescue men who had been thrown into the water.
