    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Major [then Captain] Gilder D. Jackson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-469), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 43d Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., near Vierzy, France, in action early on the morning of 18 July 1918. As Second in Command of the 43d (F) Company, Fifth Marines, while on a mission to establish liaison with a neighboring unit, Major Jackson discovered an enemy battery firing on our supporting tanks from a position concealed in a wheat field. With a splendid display of initiative and leadership, he gathered together a few men whom he organized and most skillfully and gallantly led against this position, capturing many prisoners, including two officers, four pieces of artillery, two mobile trench mortars and undoubtedly saved to the battalion by his timely act the five undamaged tanks that played such an important role in the later action.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain Gilder D. Jackson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-469), United States Marine Corps, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Jackson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Blanc Mont Ridge, 4 October 1918. While commanding the left assault company in the attack on Blanc Mont Ridge upon learning that the two supporting machine guns on his exposed left flank had been put out of action by the killing or wounding of all the crews in a severe counter attack, Captain Jackson left his company command post, crossed an open space to the machine guns under a heavy artillery and machine gun fire and with a few men from the support platoon, put them into action, himself manning one of the guns, and successfully accomplished the reduction of the hostile machine guns, thereby saving the left of the battalion from an imminent danger.
