Benjamin Chiswell entered service in the Coast Guard as a cadet in 1894 and was commissioned in 1896 through the School of Instruction of the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1929 he was appointed the FIRST Assistant Commandant of the Coast Guard and retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1934.

ALGONQUIN, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, during World War I.
