While serving with Company B, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois d’Aigremont, Crezancy, France, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, these soldiers displayed great courage and coolness under heavy artillery fire, and refused to leave their posts, their gun carts and animals, although continually in the gravest danger from exploding shells. All other drivers being either killed or wounded, it was through the efforts of these men that the remainder of the train was safely brought out.
