By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Homer T. Grover (Gover) (ASN: 554822), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Grover voluntarily advanced to the assistance of his Platoon Commander, who, because of casualties, was alone in an advanced position what must necessarily have been held to protect the exposed flank of the Infantry Battalion, to which his company was attached. Sergeant Grover risked his life in so doing, as the field was swept by such intense machine gun and rifle fire, that the advance was halted and a withdrawal ordered by the Infantry Commander. Later, Sergeant Grover assisted in organizing a scattered party of infantry and led them in a rush, which resulted in the capture of a position strongly held by machine guns and automatic rifles.
