By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Benjamin F. Gross (ASN: 553722), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Gross showed the greatest of courage and disregard for personal safety throughout the Battle of the Marne. At le Charmel on 27 July 19189, Sergeant Gross in order to cover a gap in our lines, reconnoitered ground for gun positions in full view of the enemy, being fired at continuously by direct enemy machine gun and rifle fire. His guns did efficient work in silencing the enemy machine guns.
