By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal William J. Allmond (ASN: 2395432), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the period from 15 July to 10 August 1918, Sergeant Allmond was a Platoon Runner attached to Company Headquarters, Under heavy bombardment preceding the German offensive of 15 July he repeatedly carried messages to his platoon from the Company Commander. He also volunteered for duty on patrols, which were continually from that time sent out until the Germans retreat began and in the American Offensive on the Marne and again at Fismes he again displayed the same spirit of gallantry and self-sacrifice. On 9 October 1918, Sergeant Allmond, after the officer of his company had either been killed or wounded, took charge of his platoon and kept them together in the face of heavy shell fire and continuous machine gun fire.
