(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel (Infantry) Arthur Richard Walk, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Staff, and subsequently as Commanding Officer of the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Walk and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Arthur Richard Walk, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, at the imminent risk of his life during an intense artillery preparation by the enemy, Captain Walk exhibited an ability to command troops under most trying conditions by maintaining complete control of two platoons of his company and keeping them intact as an organized fighting force although exposed to intense shell fire.

While serving with Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 11 October 1918, at Cunel Woods the 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, advanced to “leap-frog” the 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, but was completely demoralized and scattered by terrific barrage before reaching the “jumping off” place, and Captain Walk went out among the scattered units and after reorganizing them led them to the “jump off” point. He was twice knocked down by shell explosions but continued his work of reorganization until the success of the attack was assured.
