The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General Daniel Isom Sultan (ASN: 0-2212), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility as Commanding General, Northern Combat Area Command, in Burma from 24 October 1944 to 28 January 1945. During this period General Sultan exhibited outstanding ability, tact and initiative as Commanding General of an Allied command containing American, British, and Chinese units. The success of the operations directed by General Sultan in Burma against great logistical and terrain difficulties, resulted in clearing the enemy from the land route to China, thus making possible the opening of the vital Stilwell Road.
