The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Francis Murray Brady, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 9th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 12 October 1918. Lieutenant Brady led his platoon over 300 meters of open ground, attacking and capturing five enemy machine guns with their officers and crews, thereby saving many lives and establishing liaison with the troops on his right. He re-crossed the open ground to report his location. Despite intense artillery fire, he held the captured position for 48 hours, and with a loader personally silenced two enemy machine-guns which were enfilading the troops advancing to his support.
