The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John M. Millis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 354th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bantheville Woods, France, 30 October 1918. Wounded in both legs, one of them being broken when his daylight patrol was caught in heavy machine-gun fire 500 yards in advance of our lines, Second Lieutenant Millis ordered his men to return without him. He was later rescued by two soldiers.
