The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Evan Elias Lewis, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations of the 26th Division against the enemy at Marcheville and Riaville on 25 and 26 September 1918. Under a terrific enemy artillery bombardment lasting for nearly twenty-four hours and under intense machine gun fire and in fierce hand-to-hand conflicts with grenades, rifle, pistol and bayonet, Colonel Lewis and soldiers of the Division accomplished their mission and broke up four counter-attacks. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Lewis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

By his outstanding bravery, their fine spirit of self-sacrifice and his great devotion to duty during the operations of the Division north of Verdun, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, from 18 October 1918, until the cessation of hostilities, he has won for himself this distinction. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Lewis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
