The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Orrie A. Clark (ASN: 1679806), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Hill 273 in the Forest of Argonne, France, 5 October 1918. When an officer called for volunteers to cut an opening in a thick barbed wire entanglement, Private Clark unhesitatingly responded and under the enemy’s rifle fire and cross fire from two machine-guns, worked for more than an hour at cutting the wire, desisting only when ordered to do so by his officers. He then returned to his organization through the enemy’s artillery barrage.
