The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James A. Murphy (ASN: 52663), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in front of Mount Sec, northwest of Toul, France, 19 March 1918. With his patrol leader Sergeant Murphy cut and crawled through 12 strands of wire in front of an enemy listening post, and with coolness and nerve killed one of the sentinels who was firing at the patrol leader.
