The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Herbert K. Lennox (ASN: 54717), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cantigny, France, 27 May 1918. Engaged as gunner of an automatic rifle team, Private Lennox was so severely wounded that he was unable to withdraw from the advancing enemy. Concealing himself until the assaulting wave had passed over him, he opened fire on the enemy from the rear, completely discouraging their attack and forcing them to retire.
