The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Jesse A. James (ASN: 2339853), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Les Evaux, France, 13 July 1918. After many attempts to get patrols across the Marne had failed, Sergeant James alone swam the river, taking with Mm a wire, by which a boat containing two of his comrades was drawn across, without attracting the attention of the enemy.
