The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Hyde (ASN: 540798), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Belleau, on 20 June 1918. Sergeant Hyde went out into the open under heavy machine-gun fire to carry in a wounded man. Being unable to pick him up, he lay down, pulled the man on his back, and crawled to his position.
