By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant James Hyde (ASN: 540798), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 17 June 1918 during the attack on a portion of the Bois de Belleau still held by the Germans, during the course of the attack, Sergeant Hyde saw a wounded comrade lying about 75 yards in advance of the line. He rushed out to the man under a rain of machine gun bullets and upon reaching him found it impossible to pick him up. He lay down, placed the wounded soldier across his back and crawled back to the company trench.

While serving with Company B 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, being severely affected by high explosives gas so that he could hardly see, Sergeant Hyde did nevertheless maintain order and discipline in his platoon and exhibited the highest bravery and personal disregard for danger while under artillery and machine gun fire, getting his platoon into position for attack and advancing on the village of Le Charmel, France. He did further display the greatest coolness and presence of mind in assembling the scattered units of the company after the occupation of Le Charmel.

Sergeant Hyde distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 25 July 1918, in keeping order and discipline although severely affected by high explosive gas so that he could hardly see.
