The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Hanley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Le Charmel, France, July 24 – 25, 1918. After he had led his platoon through intense shell and machine-gun fire. Lieutenant Hanley, although twice wounded, remained at his post throughout the encounter.
