The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Hanley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Le Charmel, France, July 24 – 25, 1918. After he had led his platoon through intense shell and machine-gun fire. Lieutenant Hanley, although twice wounded, remained at his post throughout the encounter.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Hanley, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, throughout the offensive of 15 and 16 July 1918, near Crezancy, France, Lieutenant Hanley acquitted himself with conspicuous bravery, exhibiting splendid leadership and remarkable bravery. In the action of 24 – 25 July, before Le Charmel, Lieutenant Hanley, although twice wounded, remained at his post, where he had his platoon under shell and machine gun fire.
