The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert A. Gilmer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 371st Infantry Regiment, 93d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Trieres Farm, France, 30 September 1918. While personally reconnoitering a position to place his platoon in the defense of Trieres Farm, Lieutenant Gilmer, regardless of personal danger, exposed himself in an area swept by machine-gun fire, and was killed while in the performance of this mission.
