The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Rear Admiral Donald Bradford Beary (NSN: 0-7569), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of the Logistic Support Group of the FIFTH Fleet from January to May 1945. During this period forces under his command furnished logistic service at sea to units of the FIFTH Fleet engaged in amphibious operations at Iwo Jima and in the Okinawa Gunto and in supporting fast carrier operations, including raids on Tokyo and Kyushu. Due to his outstanding efficiency and ability to maintain a flexible organization, the logistic requirements of the fleet were supplied expeditiously at the time and places desired by the tactical commanders. His initiative and steadfast devotion to duty contributed materially to the successful support of the fleet during long periods of continuous operations at sea. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Rear Admiral Beary is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
