The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Private Carl H. Stensson (MCSN: 115942), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 18th Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, 3 October 1918. Private Stensson displayed great courage in serving as a stretcher bearer during the operations at Blanc Mont Ridge. When his helper was wounded, he went into an open road swept by machine-gun, fire to rescue him and was killed in his self-sacrificing attempt.
