The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to First Lieutenant Charles DeWayne Roberts (MCSN: 0-3221), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Company I, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, on June 6 and 8, 1918. First Lieutenant Roberts showed rare courage in repeatedly leading his platoon to an attack against an impregnable machine-gun position. Severely wounded and having lost the greater part of his men, he remained in action and persisted in requesting reinforcements with which to renew the attack.
