While serving with Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Le Charmel, on 24 July 1918, Corporal Montgomery exposed himself to gas during a shell and gas bombardment by removing his mask in order to give first aid to wounded comrades.
