While serving as a runner for the First Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the attack on Bois de Cunel on 15 October 1918, Private Lickteig carried every message given him and delivered it to the person to whom addressed. This work took him out under the most violent shell fire and through gas in the darkness.
