    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class John R. Gwin (ASN: 1550460), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery B, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon on the evening of 6 October 1918, when non-commissioned officers were not available, Private First Class Gwin volunteered to make a trip for rations, the same being over a road which at the time was swept by heavy shellfire of the enemy. He displayed great courage and though several vehicles in his immediate vicinity were blown entirely from the road, he did not falter in his journey but reached the ration dump and safely carried back to his battery the rations for the following day.
