Sergeant Gill distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near La Theodoria Farm, France, 21 July 1918, in assuming command of a patrol during action.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Ernest Gill (ASN: 542187), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While in command of Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, from 16 to 20 October 1918, and while the Company was in the front line, Sergeant Gill received information that the enemy were to counterattack the unit on his right and he then placed his company so as to be able to afford assistance to those on his right by affording them flank protection and also being in such a position that he would be able to counter attack.
