By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Colonel (Infantry) Thomas M. Anderson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Colonel (Infantry) Anderson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fossoy, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, while directing his regiment during defense of the Marne River.

While serving as Commanding Officer of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Colonel Anderson’s regiment occupied Gland from 14 to 18 July 1918, during the great German offensive on the Marne, and tenaciously held their line and seriously threatened an overwhelming force of the enemy at Fossoy. Colonel Anderson’s cool judgment, undaunted courage and repeatedly exposing himself to great danger, combined with his splendid leadership, inspired his soldiers and instilled in them a feeling of confidence which culminated in the complete route of the enemy on 16 July and forced his retreat across the Marne.
