Private Heenan distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Roncheres, France, 28 July 1918, in volunteering to go to the assistance of the wounded under terrific enemy fire.

Heenan (ASN: 2354802), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Heenan displayed great fortitude and courage in caring for the wounded at Roncheres on 28 July 1918. After working all day with the Company to which he was attached he volunteered to go to the assistance of the wounded in a more advanced battalion and worked during the entire night under heavy shell fire caring for the wounded and acting as littler bearer.
