Private Hartzel distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action 23 – 26 July 1918, near Vesle, France, in carrying important messages through heavy enemy fire.

Hartzel (ASN: 544450), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Hartzel displayed exceptional heroism at Jaulgonne, France, 23 and 26 July 1918. He voluntarily carried important messages under heavy fire when wire communications had been destroyed and runners on this same mission had been killed. He also assisted in guiding ration details and bringing in supplies for the front lines.
