By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private A. J. Hartzel (ASN: 544450), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Hartzel distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action 23 – 26 July 1918, near Vesle, France, in carrying important messages through heavy enemy fire.

He voluntarily carried important messages under heavy fire when wire communications had been destroyed and runners on this same mission had been killed. He also assisted in guiding ration details and bringing in supplies for the front lines.
