Following his graduation from Princeton, James Cannon was a Y.M.C.A. worker in the United States, France, and Italy prior to World War I. He was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1917 and was commissioned as a U.S. Army chaplain during World War I. He was dean of the Duke University Divinity School from 1951 to 1958 and dean emeritus from 1958 until his death in 1960.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) James Cannon, III, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Cannon distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Engineers, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in Bois de Money, France, 9 October 1918, in searching for and personally carrying back the wounded under extremely heavy shell fire.
