Following his graduation from Princeton, James Cannon was a Y.M.C.A. worker in the United States, France, and Italy prior to World War I. He was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1917 and was commissioned as a U.S. Army chaplain during World War I. He was dean of the Duke University Divinity School from 1951 to 1958 and dean emeritus from 1958 until his death in 1960.
