Duncan Browne graduated from Columbia University in New York City, where he was president of his class, a stand-out football player, and captain of his football team. He was ordained an Episcopalian priest and was commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain during World War I where he was cited twice for gallantry in action.. After the war he was dean of the Cathedral of Saint John, in Denver, Colorado, before assuming duties as rector of historic Saint James Episcopal Church in Chicago, Illinois, which he served for 26 years from 1924 to 1950, when he retired from active ministry.
