First Sergeant Brown distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Champagne, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, in bringing in the wounded under heavy gas and shell fire.
