By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain James H. Johnston (MCSN: 0-1491), United States Marine Corps, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Johnston distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in an attack on a ridge east of St. Etienne, France, 6 October 1918. Leading his company in the attack, Captain Johnston was struck by a machine gun bullet which severed the artery above the elbow of his right arm. Concealing his wound until too weak to walk from loss of blood, Captain Johnston ordered stretcher bearers to carry him along his company front while he personally directed the organization of the line and the repulse of a counter-attack. He consented to leave the line only after the enemy had been beaten and thrown back. On the way to the rear, the stretcher bearers were wounded by a shell and Captain Johnston thrown to the ground where he remained in a dazed condition until picked up by French soldiers some hours later.
