Department of the Army, General Orders No. 18 (June 15, 1960)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Thomas L. Lorton, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Georgia Sector Command, XII U.S. Army Corps, in Atlanta, Georgia on 3 March 1960. Seeing a woman staggering across her backyard, gasping for breath and calling for help, Sergeant Lorton ran to her assistance. Upon being informed that the woman’s daughter was lying unconscious on the floor in the house which was filled with carbon monoxide fumes, he, immediately and without concern for his own personal safety, rushed into the house despite the fact that he was completely unfamiliar with the interior of the home. Opening doors and windows as he went, gasping for breath, and faced with the risk of being trapped by the dangerous fumes, he located the unconscious girl and carried her to safety. His rapid and accurate analysis of the situation, his selfless courage and presence of mind saved the girl from possible death. Sergeant Lorton’s heroic actions in this emergency are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army, and reflect distinct credit upon himself and the military service.
