The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Richard McGraw, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 5th Training Regiment, United States Army Training Center, Infantry, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on 6 December 1959. Private McGraw was performing duty on Remageu Range and was responsible for supervising the training of basic recruits in live fragmentation grenade handling. A trainee undergoing instruction tossed and activated grenade which hit the top of the protective barrier and bounced back into the throwing bay, endangering the lives of all personnel in that area. Quickly realizing the immediate danger involved, Private McGraw unhesitatingly shouted the alarm. Without concern for his own personal safety, he lunged forward a proximally 10 feet, seized the grenade and, with only seconds to spare, tossed it out into the impact area where it instantly exploded. Private McGraw’s quick judgment, presence of mind and courageous action in this sudden emergency prevented serious injury or death to personnel within the area, and reflect distinct credit upon himself and military service.
