The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Edwin E. Hebert, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery B, 2d Howitzer Battalion (105MM), 4th Artillery, on 28 June 1959. While fishing in the Haynes Reservoir on the Fort Carson Military Reservation, Sergeant Hebert observed two boys who were swimming across the reservoir had tired and were calling for help approximately 100 yards from shore in deep water. Without hesitation or regard for his own personal safety, Sergeant Hebert entered the water, swam out to the floundering swimmers and attempted to bring them to safety. Finding one of the distressed victims in a state of panic, Sergeant Hebert managed to wrestle him under control and, further jeopardizing his own life, supported one boy and towed the other to shore. Sergeant Hebert’s quick presence of mind and courageous actions in this emergency saved the lives of these two young swimmers and reflect distinct credit upon himself in the military service.
