The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private David G. Brown, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the United States Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg, Mississippi, on 12 July 1959. While swimming in the Perl River northeast of Jackson, Mississippi, Private Brown heard cries from help from a group of three people who had stepped into a deep sinkhole in the river and were floundering in the strong undertow. Without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, he proceeded immediately to the scene, rescued the nearest struggling victim and returned and carried another of the drowning swimmers to safety. He continued his efforts to rescue the other swimmer until assistance arrived. Private Brown’s presence of mind and courageous actions in this emergency saved the lives of two individuals, and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
