The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Sergeant Albert A. Ilse, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company B, 2d Battle Group, 4th Infantry, at Hohenfels, Germany, on 14 November 1958. Sergeant Ilse was engaged in tactical field training exercises in company with his gun crew making a night withdrawal under blackout conditions when the jeep in which they were riding overturned in deep mud and pinned him and his driver underneath. The vehicle sank to 18 inches and continued to sink slowly, threatening the life of both men. Realizing that immediate rescue would be imperative, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Sergeant Ilse unselfishly and heroically ordered the members of his crew to rescue the driver first, at the sacrifice of his own life. His brave courage and selfless devotion to his men are in keeping with the highest and most cherished ideals of the United States Army, and reflect the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
