Department of the Army, General Orders No. 30 (August 10, 1959)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Charles P. Lothamer, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Company, 48th Transportation Group (Truck), Fort Eustis, Virginia, at Newport News, Virginia, on 19 March 1959. Upon learning that a 2-year-old girl was trapped in the bedroom of a burning home, Sergeant Lothamer immediately and without regard for his own personal safety, entered the house and attempted to save the stranded child. He continued his efforts until forced to leave by the intense heat and heavy smoke. The unselfish and courageous actions taken by Sergeant Lothamer materially assisted in the ultimate rescue of the child, and reflect great credit upon himself in the military service.
