The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Ralph M. Wilkerson, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 1st Battle Group, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, on 27 October 1958. Lieutenant Wilkerson was serving as safety officer, Grenade Range No. 25, Fort Riley, Kansas, during a practical exercise with live hand grenades, when a trainee threw an activated concussion grenade which struck the top of the protective barricade, bounced off the top barrier and fell back into the pit, endangering the lives of all persons within the immediate area. Observing that the trainee who threw the grenade had fallen to his hands and knees after the faulty toss, Lieutenant Wilkinson, without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, rushed forward, pushed the trainee aside, picked up the grenade and, with only seconds to spare, quickly threw it over the protective wall in time to prevent serious injury or death to personnel in the pit. Lieutenant Wilkerson’s quick judgment, presence of mind, and courageous action in this dangerous situation reflect distinct credit upon himself and the military service.
