The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Ivon M. Abney, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, United States Army Infantry Center Troop Command, Fort Benning, Georgia, on 18 March 1958. While en route to his home from Fort Benning, Sergeant Abney observed a car veer off the road into a ditch and start to burn. He immediately rushed to the scene and saw an officer lying unconscious in the vehicle which by this time was burning furiously. As the injured officer could not be reached from the door, Sergeant Abney bravely and at the risk of his own life, promptly entered the vehicle and moved the injured officer to the door where others could carry him away to safety. This immediate and courageous action by Sergeant Abney in complete disregard of his own personal safety undoubtedly prevented the loss of the injured officer’s life, reflecting great credit upon himself and the military service.
