The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Allen B. Greene, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 1st Battle Group, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, while serving as Safety Non-Commissioned Officer on Grenade Range No. 38, Fort Carson, Colorado, on 23 April 1958. While engaged in instructions involving practice with live fragmentation grenades, a basic trainee threw an activated grenade which struck the top log of the protective barrier from which it was thrown. When the grenade bounced off the log, rolled back inside the barricade and came to rest approximately 4 feet from the top of the pit with its fuse burning, the trainee became panic-stricken and began to run, making himself a target for the deadly shrapnel and flying debris resulting from the detonation of this type of weapon. Working with only seconds to spare, Sergeant Greene, without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, overtook the frightened trainee, tackled him, threw him to the ground and shielded him with his own body. Sergeant Greene’s quick judgment, presence of mind, and unselfish and courageous actions in risking his life in this dangerous situation prevented serious injury or death to a fellow soldier, reflecting the utmost credit upon himself and the military service.
