The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Second Class Salvador Torres-Fuentes, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of the 533rd Ordinance Company (R&C), on 21 November 1957, at Coleman Barracks, Manheim/Sandhofen, Germany. While performing duties as a senior wheel vehicle mechanic in the motor pool shop building of his unit, the gasoline tank on and M-123 tractor upon which he was working ruptured and caught fire, creating grave danger of an explosion, possibly causing death or serious injury to the eighteen persons working in the shop, and serious and extensive damage to the building and equipment therein. Specialist Torres voluntarily and without hesitation or regard for his own personal safety, cranked the engine, mounted the cab which was quickly becoming enveloped by flames and drove it out of the building to a safe distance from all personnel and equipment. After jumping off the burning tractor he seized a fire extinguisher and proceeded to help in combating the fire. Specialist Torres’ fortitude, presence of mind and prompt and courageous action in the face of extreme personal danger reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
