The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Jose R. Alicea-Aguayo, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company F, Specialist Training Regiment, at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on 26 November 1957. While participating in live hand grenade practice a trainee attempting to throw a fragmentation grenade dropped it inside the safety pit and fell to the ground near the rolling grenade, exposing himself to the danger of serious injury or loss of life. Sergeant Alicea quickly and unhesitatingly picked up the activated grenade and tossed it over the parapet where it exploded just before hitting the ground ten feet in front of the safety pit. Although fully aware of the danger that the grenade might explode instantaneously, and without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Alicea undoubtedly prevented injury and possible loss of life to the trainee in the danger area. Sergeant Alicea’s prompt and courageous action in the face of extreme danger reflects distinct credit on himself and the military service.
